Vancouver Area Homeless Outreach

A Growing Number of People Experiencing Homelessness and in Need of Christs Love

A total of 3,605 people in the Metro Vancouver region were identified as homeless in 2017. Of those, 1,032 were unsheltered and 2,573 sheltered.

An exciting local ICCA-IRM project, facilitated by volunteers of Ruby’s Wishes, includes sharing coffee, soup, sandwiches, and Jesus’ love with homeless people living in Vancouver’s downtown Eastside. In November 2017, when one of our board members and her husband first stepped out of their truck to serve coffee and food, they saw small tents draped with tarps surrounded with shopping carts. Some were covered in cardboard boxes, dirty blankets and battered old suitcases. The carts held a mixture of all someone’s worldly belongings or were filled with tires and bicycle parts perhaps from some poor victim’s bike that was stripped down. In the alleyway behind, the stench was powerful, covered with needles and resident rats. Addicts huddled in doorways or beside dumpsters.

Our faithful volunteers were expecting to see these harsh living conditions but not anticipating how God would use these homeless people often with dirty faces and blackened fingernails to do a powerful work in their hearts, filling them with love, and giving opportunities to pray with them and lead some to Christ. God met many needs before they even asked, including committed additional help and donations of food by Cobb’s bakery and Starbucks.

In 2019 in Vancouver city alone there are about 2,223  people are experiencing homelessness in  - 614 are  people are living and sleeping on the street
